For many of us that are prone to over indulging our pets, we can find lots of reasons for allowing our pets to make full use of our furniture such as the beds we sleep in, and the chesterfields we lounge upon. After all many great memories are built up from those moments snuggling on the couch with your dog.
The problem is that the big comfy couch just might not be so healthy for them. This is especially true with some of these units as well as other furniture that was purchased before 2004. If you think about around this time it was all the rage to buy furniture that was dubbed as fire retardant. Wow this was great increased safety against our furniture going up in flames. The problem however, is that the chemicals that were used for this happen to be released from the material of the furniture for many years to come.
Now as humans we are exposed to this but it would seem that at the present these are small amounts and in any event its not been determined as to how dangerous this is. In the case of the dogs however, that tend to lounge around on furniture such as this, the levels of the chemical has been found to be 5 to 10% higher in them. Whether it does no harm or not its not something that belongs in their body.
Its not likely that you can protect your pets from all the dangers in your home but at least by keeping your pets off the furniture its one less potential danger you have to worry about.
